It was AWESOME!
I have 3 daughters....Daughter #2 was a Senior at St.Mary's (the sister school to Notre Dame). It was Senior Day for the Irish. so the family decided to go East and see the BYU game.
I never played or saw a game in snow, so I prayed really hard that it would be a snow game. I must have been a real good boy that year
..
I found out at the tailgate that my jacket could hold 8 beers. No ice needed, they stayed cold in my pockets. My girls all thought that was incredible, so did I.
The announcer at halftime said this was the coldest game EVER at ND! At the end of the 3rd qtr he announce that it was -17 degrees wind chill. The snow, slush and ice was literally blowing sideways. My wife spent the entire 2nd half in the girls bathroom because it had heaters in it. I remembered my Bear Grylls survival skills, I kept standing and moving, and with EVERY piece of clothing I brought from CA (TRUE!) I was staying surprisingly warm even though my face was getting pelted with ice and freezing wind throughout most of the game....IT WAS AWESOME!
Irish WIN! Throw marsh mellows at everyone because it's "Tradition".We all get to go on the field after the game with all the Seniors, Pile in with the team to sing the Alma Mater...It was a serial moment!
Lastly, my daughter tells me that this would be the last game the Irish will play on grass because they will be changing the field to all weather turf the next season. So, thinking quick on my feet, I bend down and grab 2 handfuls of sod and stuff them in my 8 beer jacket! Went back to work the following week and gave 2 buddies of mine "ACTUAL GRASS" from the last Irish grass field. They are both Domers, and yes, I still walk on water in their eyes! I kept some grass myself, grinded up a little and sprinkled it on my yard...I still think about that day when I cut my grass and do gardening.
It was a great day with my family!
