overthecap shows DeSean's cap hit as $3,264,706 ... but the Rams can only unload the portion of his contract that they haven't paid yet.
DJ's salary is $2.75M and that gets paid out in 18 equal installments of around $153,000. Assuming DJ gets traded after the Texans' game the Rams will be on the hook for 8 weeks pay (around $1.22M). That cap hit would stay with the Rams, but the rest of his salary (around $1.53M) along with the associated cap hit would go to his new team.
DJ also has a 'per game roster bonus' that according to [
www.spotrac.com] pays him $102,941 per game. That works out to $1.75M ... but only $514,705 counts against the cap. That's because someone in the NFL front office determined that DJ was only likely to be active for 5 games this season. (That's a 'likely to be earned' incentive.)
I'm pretty sure that DJ gets that bonus for the first 8 games (assuming he's active against the Texans). That means that the Rams will pay DJ $823,528 for his 'per game roster bonus'. $514,705 is already accounted for in this year's cap and that cap hit also stays with the Rams since they're the ones who paid it. The remaining $308,823 the Rams already paid DJ goes against next year's cap. (Note: if DJ was active for fewer than 5 games the Rams would get a credit towards next year's cap.)
Bottom line: if DJ is traded the Rams absorb a cap hit of around $1.734M this year and another $308,823 next year. And his new team would be hit with a $1.53M cap hit this year plus another $102,941 next year for every game DJ is active the rest of the season. Basically, the Rams would save $1.53M against this year's cap and up t0 $1.029M against next year's cap.
