"Not enough sense of urgency"...That say's it all.
When McVay say's that about Rookie Tutu....It means he does not know the plays, he does not study the playbook, he's not working hard enough to "catch up" to playing professional football, he still weighs only 145 lbs and is not "sticking" to his diet.
A couple of things:
1) I'm not so sure that Tutu's weight is an issue here. The Rams drafted him knowing that he's tiny and also knowing that he wasn't going to magically/legally supplementally gain 40-lbs in six months. Me? Yes...I can gain 40-lbs just by looking at an NFT training table. Tutu? Not so much (and they had to know this).
2) The things that you mentioned about him not getting into his playbook may very well be correct. But shouldn't that only limit him to offensive snaps? I mean...do you really need to know the playbook to serve as a P/KR? Shouldn't the instructions for that be as simple as:
Tutu...we need you to do four things on this punt return: A) field the ball; B ) the blocks will be set up to your right/middle/left...follow them; C) but since our ST's stinks, use your best instincts to get positive yards; and, D) whatever happens, hold onto the ball and hand it to the ref after the play.As Tutu has shown the ability to field punts, I suspect that he's been having trouble with Part D.
