The Rams bend / don't break is playing with fire..
And that is what I have been saying.
We need to remember that the Rams lost in the playoffs last year. Staley
had a top defense and it was great to see, but it was a bend but don't
break defense that was PLAYED WELL.
Posts from other boards were plastered here with claims that Morris
was using his own scheme or that he was being more passive than
Staley or that he was bad or needed to be fired.
My point, which gets lost, is that those idiots had no clue what they were
talking about, None. They were full of crap because they didn't know the
basics of defense nor of the Staley defense.
So, I called them out. With proof. And could show tons more. And could
explain it if anyone cared to not live in ignorance.
I also offered a few explanations for the problems, which were there.
One was only 3 players were in same poitions as last year.
And on a defense there are maybe 15-16 guys that play
So, I suggested the new guys were not as good at playing the scheme
as the old guys. It takes time.
Also, it was pointed out that Rams played excellent teams early on
and now have a few weak sisters for a few weeks. And that
caused issues.
Also, have shown that even with all that, the numbers are not
THAT much different in terms of points per game, yards rushing per
game, turnovers, sacks, etc.
Now------to your point
If you want to discuss defense and the issues happy to do it. But
cannot entertain falsehoods like the "bend-but-don't-break" scheme
is Morris' and not Staley's.
If you want more man coverage--you have to ask why you do.
Do Rams have players who can play it? All the DBs? Not just Ramsey.
What did Staley know that we didn't when he installed this scheme?
What did McVay like about it that he had Morris keep it?
So, I agree, defense is an issue
My view was in first few games there was little edge pressure
and now there seems to be more with Lewis and Obo.
Will that continue? I don't know. But that was a major thing
that was lacking and is now coming around.
Will the defense struggle against good teams with good offenses?
Probably. But they will have good games, too.
The whole deal was people were wanting Morris fired for things
he didn't do wrong.
If you don't like the scheme, blame McVay, he is having Morris'
run Staley's scheme.
Sure, there can be adjustments, here and there, but Staley
didn't run things exactly the same game after game. it depends
on the opponent. Down and distance, personnel, who is healthy.
Morris does the same thing. But the scheme---the front, the coverages
are the same. Rams are not a man coverage team---not last year
not this year.
They put a shell over the top and mix things under, some man, some
zone, but most places that cover this say rams are a quarters defense
meaning that they soft zones, and try to make some plays by
having a safety "rob" in the middle and by playing off and breaking
to the ball...that is what they do. Now, and last year.
They mix in some man, but Staley liked to disguise things but showing
the same look almost every play and then rotating to what he wanted
to do and Morris is doing the same things,
All anyone has to do is watch last year and this year's All-22
