Rams like to draft skill players with their earliest picks.
They also like to draft players one year early to best develop them. DJ will almost certainly be gone next year, so Atwell is just the latest in a very long line of ‘next year’ players drafted.
When considering the above 2 points the Atwell pick fits with previous Ram strategy nicely.
I’ll also say this.
The more I’ve learned from the coaches and beat writers about Atwell, the more I like.
Yeah, he’s small, but he is a football player not just a track star, unlike Tavon.
Runs good routes, unlike Tavon.
Good hands, unlike Tavon.
Football smart, unlike Tavon.
Seems to be a good teammate.
Don’t get hung up on the PR thing because that’s just a distraction. Atwell was drafted to replace DJ in ‘22 pure and simple.
Time will tell whether Rams made a good or a poor choice with Atwell. But they probably are now thinking that he’s right on schedule.
He doesn't look good to me his routes are suspect. His hands looked decent in preseason. He is not a good blocker. He needs open space and doesn't look like he can make space on his own with any type of wiggle. He is not a very good contested ball catcher. His catch radius is ridiculously small and he doesn't have ability to fight for catches. This guy is a bust in every sense of the word and I don't need 5 years to see it. I do not see any positives other than he is fast. He relies entirely on his speed and everyone in the NFL is just as fast or faster than him and outweigh him by 80-100lbs.
