Is Staley a better DC? Yeah. I wish the Rams still had him. But a few things I'd point out.
Last year through 4 games the Rams were giving up 5.0 YPC and 124 rushing yards/game. As others have said before, the Rams 2020 defense wasn't quite the Rams 2020 defense yet through 4 games.
Also, regarding Darius Williams, while he's giving up a higher completion percentage his yards/completion and yards/target allowed are actually noticeably DOWN from 2020. They are willing to sacrifice some shorter completions to not give up big(ger) plays.
Turnovers: the Rams were 2-4 last year when they did not force a turnover (9-3 when they did), and one of those two wins was the game @WAS where they held them to 108 yards. The Rams did not force a turnover Sunday vs. ARZ (a top 5 team) and were -2 in turnover ratio.
Also, with the Chargers is Staley working with less talent than the 2020 Rams? Maybe. But I'd say not by a lot (Bosa, James, etc.). He has a very good group over there. AND he's an excellent coach... Rookie CB Asanta Samuel Jr. has 2 INT and 5 PD already. I really wish he had slipped to the Rams at #57 this year....
I think of the defenders the Rams lost/had to replace this offseason the biggest downgrade is Long (vs. Troy Hill) as the CB3. And that's why I think Morris' comments about Rochell and perhaps using him more going forward make sense.
