Two different coordinators.
One last year happened to get the defense online and rolling at the highest level.
The other has not had a top defense. The other also does not have an experience list that includes Cover 4 which is said to be our core defense. He's a heavy Tampa 2 type.
One DC building the best defense in the league last year after a slow start does not excuse the other in terms of looking at it objectively. This is the type of take that relies on "hey guys let's not be stupid because this might equal that" logic. If that's your thing, well, pat yourself on the back don't worry everything's gonna be fine.
But for me the danger signs were there. They're still there, two games in. Will it change? Maybe. Maybe the slow starts are the side effect of McVay's preseason approach. Or maybe not. Maybe this guy's not up to snuff. I don't profess to know, but I also am not interested in sticking my head in the sand. It is a fact that this style of defense plays into what our opponents will want to do which is drive the field and kill the clock while Stafford's arm stays cold. It is not complimentary to our team IMO.
I would guess going forward things get more aggressive in terms of calls and safety utilization in the box. But we'll see.
