I just don't see the need to bash our last QB.
Well, I certainly don't mean to bash him. I liked Goff, I defended him, and I kept hoping he could build on his great year. And I don't have any need to hammer him or go on and on. We can love what we have without worrying too much about the past.
However, we all know that he had limitations. And this was a big one. He simply did not routinely convert 3rd downs with quick flicks. For a supposedly top flight pass offense, we failed to move the chains a lot.
And I don't assume it was all on Goff. Not at all. I like the McVay package in many ways. But he is surely guilty of getting stuck in his schemes when there are simpler opportunities offering better odds. I have not seen us ATTEMPT those quick conversion tosses anywhere near as often as we might. We have great route runners. It seems to me that if you let Kupp and Woods slip inside they will be available for 7-8 yards again and again. And as in the play I mention, Hibee can slip out into the dead spots too. I think it's a set of opportunities we too often ignore.
We hear a lot about McVay having a partner, not a student. I hope Stafford will actually teach McVay some things about how veterans can execute high percentage plays that don't require reinventions of the football.
