As you said... there were several top plays on this night... and certainly the 1st down pass to Higs was a great play.
Kupp is amazing. I can't figure how he does it. He isn't a super athlete of the sort you imagine as having great YAC. Yet, as Collinsworth said, he topped the league. Did you see how Stafford celebrated and kept jabbing a thumbs up in Kupp's direction? He loves the talent he is working with.
Now, I am not sure the Higbee completion was a "great play." It was a sort of routine pickup that few people probably paid attention to.
But that is what I love. Stafford made a key 3rd down conversion look routine. Flick. Move the chains. What I love is that this is the sort of play you will face many times in a game and that a killer QB and receivers can complete over and over. I want this to be precisely a routine play ... for us. The kind of play that slays and then you do it again and again.
For years, decades we have failed to hit those quick tosses to the inside--slants, short posts, look ins (hey ... we called them look ins in the late 60s and early 70s!). Everything has been over-elaborate and slow developing and low percentage. Those quick inside looks are damn hard to stop if you have the right personnel and a scheme that is willing to take simple when it is on offer. It just thrilled me to say Stafford just toss a dart and move on.
I hope this is a taste of what is to come! I wouldn't call it a great play. I would say that the prospect of seeing a lot of these plays is great. Does that make sense?
And Stafford's love of the moment. Damn ... it is tasty!
