He has always run a varied approach defensively. Before he got to the Patriots he logged years of shutting down the best offenses in the league with the Giants to include one of the greatest upsets in history in that win over the Bills. Which btw looked a lot like the win over our Rams in '01.
Morris really only knows Cover 2 and 3, just going off his defenses over the years. None of which have really been good.
I realize where you were coming from in referencing Belicheat. But the truth is Morris is a great leader who has a questionable track record in his defensive coordination. And he came to a team that ran a ton of Cover 4 on the way to being the best in the league during the season last year. So as I have pointed out more than once the alignment of these things is what is troublesome.
Then fast forward to game one and we see a light box giving up easy yardage on the ground. Take a look at that first big run we gave up for example and a big part of it is two safeties playing back on their heels for a 2nd and 6 which is a run down. This is why Cover 3 took over as the prevalent scheme in the league for so many years and not Cover 2, because of that run support it provides. Lacking that man in the box was a difference on that play, where the left side of the defensive formation did not have an ILB due to playing four down lineman as well on that snap.
Now we could get into what happened up front to make that hole so big but point is in the NFL coordination is a numbers game and it's about getting the right numbers into the right areas in the right situation. Then the players either make the play or they don't and of course players matter big time. But when you play two safeties deep with zero movement into the box by either at the snap on a 2nd and 6, when looking at a condensed formation, at midfield when you really want to snuff it out while there's room for them to punt vice go four downs... That is poor coordination. IMO.
