Also, some positions are probably harder to learn than RB. I'm thinking OL, who have to recognize fronts and then react to stunts and blitzes. And WR, who have to understand sight adjustments (and react to them the way the QB reacts). As a team, the offense can only move forward at the pace of the slowest player. And I reference 'slowest player' as the guy who has the most to learn, not the dumbest guy.
My guess is that the RBs get their roles down pretty easily in the offseason and do a lot of needless repetition during team drills just so everyone else gets up to speed. And the thought that a new RB can get up to speed quickly doesn't seem strange to me, either.
