I think Lewis and Obo are both more talented than Lawler although more injury prone.
If they both stay healthy the Rams defense will be better for it.
If one guy gets hurt (Lewis or Obo) then he goes to IR and Lawler gets promoted to the 53. And at that point the Rams are no worse off than if they cut whoever it is that got hurt and kept Lawler.
And if the other guy gets hurt (Obo or Lewis) then IR him, too and call someone else up and the Rams are
still no worse off than if they cut both Lewis and Obo right out of the gate.
I guess there is a risk that Lawler and whoever that second call-up is might get scooped up by another team before the Rams get a chance to promote them, but I don't see that happening.
IOW, what is the real risk of keeping Lewis and Obo on the initial 53?
**EDIT** Looks like Obo is going right to the IR. He's on the initial 53 so he can be activated in three weeks. I expect Lawler to be added to the 53 as soon as Obo comes off it.
