Oldnotdead chimes in on the trade…

August 25, 2021 09:04AM
Here’s oldnotdead…

Sony has average speed for the position (4.54), i.e. making him faster than Jones, :eyeroll: but he gives them that between the tackles short yardage guy they have needed since Malcolm Brown. He's not a breakaway threat per se but he's looked tough as a guy who can get you those short to medium yards.

I like the acquisition actually. He's the type of #3 workhorse type of RB that is useful. I'm not so quick to discount his longevity here. This could be a win for both the Rams and Michel. He fell out of favor in NE because he's not the franchise RB they thought they drafted. Here in LA he isn't expected to be anything but a role player which is exactly what he is.

The initial cost is high but workable. The Pats will get a 5th and 6th rounder for Sony and that converts to a 4th rounder if the Rams receive a comp pick for him. That's why I think the Rams will offer Sony a reasonable but short (2yr) deal. Sony is a good RB capable of giving the Rams move the chains yardage and tough between the tackles running.

This signing has changed the Ram draft dynamic. Instead of drafting a RB, Sony is that "drafted" RB. he will make a solid contribution as a role player. This will give the Rams an opportunity to use 2022 to see how Akers is upon his return. If Akers has lost speed and explosiveness as I think is possible the Rams can draft a RB in 2023. Meanwhile, the Rams are solid in their RB room with the addition of Michel. He could be moved into that #2 or #3 role right now as he and Henderson are the only two proven vets. More likely I see Sony in a more situational role as the #3 RB. In that role he has a place on this roster over the long term in the middle of the rotation if he chooses to play it. What I'm saying is that the Rams now have a Malcolm Brown type of RB with better speed than Brown. He's not going to be that featured RB but capable of a situational rotation in the same way Brown was used for years.

Welcome to the Rams, as the new Malcolm Brown, Sony Michel (he's actually a better RB from scrimmage than Brown was). Oh BTW his injury last year was for a quad. He's had minor knee injuries but he hasn't missed much time due to them.
