While selecting draft picks is a combination of timing, good scouting, and not just a little luck, in the end success is a batting average. And if the batting average can stay in a very good level, then it contributes to the rebuild being avoided.

Of course, as the Rams show, you can have a home grown superstar or a FA superstar or a trade. As Demoff said, it is rare that we see QBs traded. But, what a team must do is strike when an opportunity arises and not be shy about paying the price. Now the Rams have a reputation for this, and players/agents know this.

Salary cap also comes into play. And Demoff made the point that there are some creative ways to solve that if somebody you really want is available. And there are ways to dump cap when mistakes are made that can even involve essentially giving up picks to get someone to take a high priced player off your hands (Goff) and dump some big salary sooner than later.

There is no "best" system. It's an issue of picking a viable one, and then doing everything right to support it, including having FO guys that are fully bought in to it. I think that even goes down to players. Mid-round players are usually not as demanding of "me" playing time as are 1st round guys. Mid-round guys understand they weren't taken high for a reason and they have much to prove.

The Rams have picked a system, built a FO around it, a coaching staff around it, and a team around it. And so it works.
