I remember hearing during the draft that many teams were making trades either up or out for future draft picks in the 2022 draft after the first 2-3 rounds. The thinking was due to COVID and the lack of a combine that this was a draft that was like drafting in the dark. The reaction then was that it would be wise to stock up for next year when more information on players would be available. I was flipping back and forth between NFL network and ESPN. I don't clearly remember who was bringing up this discussion. It might have been Peter Schrager. (Does anyone else remember it?)
There was a comment about an alternate strategy, a lottery pick draft strategy. The lottery concept involved the idea that with so many teams being cautious and bailing out that there were opportunities to get players with rare traits that generally would not be available on day 3. The idea was to get your team as many chances as possible for a chance to hit on some low round picks for players with elite measurables. They did not mention specific teams in this discussion but Snead came to mind during the discussion.
The LA Rams traded back three time during the 2021 NFL draft and got extra picks on each trade.
