Think there is a chance the coach was telling the QB what to do until just before the snap because the QB was having a hard time reading the defense and needed help?

No. I think that's a made up thing people say to get McVay off the hook. In fact, to be honest? It's preposterous.

Besides. #1. A coach in a qb's ear before the snap does nothing for reading post-snap formations. #2. A qb who CANNOT read defenses (one of the stupidest myths out there about Goff) does not come off the bench, injured, on the road, in the playoffs, and play well...does not win a championship game in New Orleans of all places and outplay Brees...does not throw 51 times against the Tampa defense on the road on a day when the offense cannot run the ball, and contribute to a win.

And so on. Some of the things people say about Goff defy logic and reason. Repeat: you cannot play those games like that (and others I did not list) if you CANNOT read defenses. Period. I mean...c'mon.

Meanwhile, we know from people who saw it on the staff that when McV was Goff's impatient qb coach in 2019 and 2020, Goff showed increasing signs of confidence issues, but when he had actual qb coaches who acted as a buffer (re-read Thirry), he did much better.

Now will Stafford be more accomplished in his ability to see what defenses are doing post-snap? Well he bloody well better be since he's a 13 year vet! In fact the 13 year Stafford is better than the 5th year Stafford at those things. That's what 8 more years does.

Which is good for McVay too, because he showed all sorts of signs he handled Goff wrong (at least in part), and in contrast, he is just simply not going to do that with the more veteran (and therefore more savvy) Stafford.
