3) Ernest Jones ... I don't dislike the player. I had about 10 guys still available I had rated higher. Jabril Cox must have bombed the interviews.
Jones can thump, and my guess is his football IQ puts him in the green dot sooner rather than later. In this case Im guessing they drafted his mind and attitude. They know what they like at ILB.
Positive physical is his burst numbers ... he can fight off an OG.
I had him as a 5th rounder though.
Jones would probably come off the field as they rotate through their nickle / dime sub packages: Which is a lot, right?
Why?
I think that they see Jones as exactly as you conjectured about
He's got high IQ for football, and after getting his sea legs they may have him penciled as a latter season starter. Remaining on the field, and calling defenses.
He doesn't have the athletic body that Littleton did, but he may have the mind too get the flow of all those other bodies sorted out in all the sub packages.
John Johnson is gone, and that was his job. Calling the defenses.
Maurice Alexander was on thin ice, and who knew? Phillips and company were waiting on Johnson to get his bearings, and as soon as he did, Alexander was history.
Still, Littleton was there
With him gone, too, there was JJ
Now JJ is gone
They need to continue to develop guys to more than just suit and play; They need them to call the defense, too.
Right now, we have to expect it's a mix of Kiser, and either Burgess or Fuller?
Kiser seems unable to stay healthy and the 2 safeties saw time away, too.
We'll see but there's a chance that we'll see Jones midseason as a regular.
