Yes, it's my position they could not block "well enough" to keep McVay/Goff from checking to quicker hitting targets than he did in 17 and 18 when the line was more consistent. The problem wasn't only playcalling and QB. The inability to consistently keep the defense out of the backfield was a major problem in a handful of games and a limitation in most.
I have consistently said that the problem with last year's 22nd ranked offense was three things: QB, playcalling, and the OL. So we're in agreement there.
Personally, I have the OL as the least of those three problems. They did have major problems in a handful of games but other than that I felt they played pretty well.
We are close in our assessment but only differ in my perception (which I hypothesized before the 20 season began) that the overall weakness of the line would force McVay to condense the offense to mask the weaknesses. As the season progressed, giving Goff more control exasperated the problem as he did well quite often but had crucial errors that McVay obviously expected better from him. If only we were privy to their postgame evaluations, we could know what McVay really thinks about his line. I suppose the lack of aggression to re sign Blythe is a sign. Not trading Havenstein is another. The line is just okay as far as I'm concerned. They aren't terrible. But I'm spoiled by the 70's, 80's, GSOT, and 17/18 lines and pine for that kind of standard once again.
Last years line was better than both the 2019 OLs. But--it still had issues. I don't think the qb could trust it to execute a long series of deeper dropbacks. That not only had an effect on the playcalling, it had an effect on the qb too obviously. And that's not even counting the games where the OL got beat up and dominated.
My feeling is, if you're looking for your qb to make up for your line issues, then, that just amounts to you not working on your line issues.
