Well the qb oline and play calling are all linked but which was/were the cause? Prior to the goff trade I felt the oline was deficient in that they were not giving goff enough time on obvious passing downs which forced mcvay to call faster developing plays which in turn defenses figured out. In other words Mcvay couldn't call the game he wanted. Now that Goff is traded we know that mcvay felt that his qb was either equally or more at fault with the lack of execution. In any event I would put play calling last on the list because whether it was more oline or qb execution mcvay was clearly frustrated in the ability of the offense to function as he wanted.
It is hard to know which of the three variables was the primary cause. I don't know that as fans we can ever really know that. I agree that it appears that the QB was most at fault. If McVay was a losing, incompetent coach I wouldn't trust his assessment of which one was the primary problem but because he's a winning and very competent coach, I feel comfortable going with his assessment.
The Wolford game led me to that conclusion too. His 9 deep shots in that one game was compelling evidence to me that QB decision-making was a huge factor in what kind of deep game we had. After seeing the disparity, I concluded in that game that the OL was less of a factor than I had previously believed.
