If you add a void year it's not 2 years. (And btw it looks like right now he DOES have a void year in 2023: [
overthecap.com] ).
So anyway with that it's not 2 years. Right?
The point being that you don't end up with this big cap hit in 2022. So let's say it actually was just 2 years like we thought before, and they turned his 2021 roster bonus into a pro-rated bonus. That would make it 5 M per year in 2021 and 2022. Making the 2021 cap hit 15 M, but then making the 2022 cap hit 28 M.
Anyway even with a void year it's not that advantageous. Let's say that with the void year turned his roster bonus in 2021 into a pro-rated bonus, which would be 10 divided by 3 or about 3.33 M a year. That would make the 2021 cap hit 16.66 M, the 2022 cap hit 26.66 M, and the 2023 cap hit 3.33 M.
One way that gets improved is if you re-do the entire deal, make it 4 years, convert both roster bonuses from 2021 and 2022 into a pro-rated bonus, which would subtract 5 M each from both 2021 and 2022 (cap hits now being 15 M and then 18 M). (I don't know what it would be for 2023 and 2024, though you could make 2024 a void year too).
