Jourdon explained that on the 11 podcast. It is common for a restructure to be built in to a player's contract, and it is built in to Stafford's. So the Rams can restructure his contract without he or his agent agreeing.
That said, Jourdon also said that they won't if they don't have to. I suspect the Rams would also prefer to do a extension or whole new contract that allowed the Rams some more cap space this year perhaps even next.
Me...... I leave it alone and see how it works out for 2021. Rams have him pretty cheap already and they ought to leave it that way as they are only on the hook for 2 years. You just never know how things work out (re: Goff). While it would be terrible if Stafford did not work out, at least at the end of 2 years they are free of his contract with no dead cap. Wait a year.
Restructuring means you move money into future years. Stafford has only 2 years. So it would be moving future money, all into next year. So with just 2 years restructuring would not work so good.
What they CAN do is extend him. That;s the only viable way to reduce his 2021 cap hit.
