This part above is not true. They have options other than a contract extension unless you're calling adding another void year an extension.

They can make 2024 a void year.

So they would then have 2 years with the original contract--2021 and 2022--and a 3rd year that is voided, and then add a 2nd voided year? Well the math would work on that.

Is that the same as extending the contract? All I know is that Football Outsiders describes them in those terms:

Quote

In the contract above the team is limited in its proration due to the three year length of the deal. To increase the ability to prorate money the team will offer the player to tack on two voidable years on the end of the contract. That now brings the term of the contract to 5 years. [overthecap.com] .

Others use the term extension too in relation to adding voidable years:

Quote

For older players who might be done after the current season, a voidable extension can help the team and the player loses no money he was already due. [steelersdepot.com] .

This source adds:

So, how do voidable contract extensions possibly play into the plans of the Pittsburgh Steelers this offseason.?

So that wasn't my point...but now that it has come up, yes adding voidable years is called an extension, because it is a condition of the contract and the player has to agree to it. So I think this gets us into too much of a semantics issue, but, if the player has to agree to it, it is altering and changing the contract. It's not the same as regular extensions but I see why people are calling them extensions.

But--any way you cut it, restructuring a simple 2 year deal puts a lot of money in the 2nd year. That is the point I was making. Is it true or not? (And obviously it is.)

Either way yes adding a 2nd voidable year would allow them to spread out the cap hit in ways they could not with just 2 contract years or with 2 contract years plus 1 voided year.
