These owners didn't get to be billionaire's by thinking about how to do anything but make money...... not spend it. Spending it is what the other guy thinks about.
A helpful crisis has plopped right into their laps. Sure, they are indeed taking a revenue hit. But they know it's only short term. But, players salaries? Long term.
While of course it's speculation, I know what I'd do if I were an owner. I wouldn't change a thing. I'd use the lower cap from the Covid crisis to help reduce big paydays not only for the top players but also for the mid-tier guys who always get way overpaid (guys like Floyd for instance). I'd get rid of the big salary guys on the team that are only decent contributors. Guys that the media and fans might go bizarro over in normal times, but will be far more accepting and understanding in these times. Because the owners can spin this thing not as greed, but as a regrettable result of Covid.
Sure. The Players Union wants all kinds of cool tweaks to help their players. The owners don't want to help the players get more. They want to get more for themselves and to protect their business interests long term.
Remember: the NFL is set up for parity and to a point that includes revenues and expenses. So all the owners can benefit from this crisis by doing....... nothing.
