At the time we laid it all on Jeff Fisher's feet. And Shottenheimer. Some of it deserved. But when you look at rookies pressed into starting on non-playoff teams since Goff was drafted - he may be one of the worst. Bad scheme aside - the team had a decent defense with Donald and Brockers, plus a younger, healthier Todd Gurley. Fisher's teams weren't dumpster fires - just consistent 7-9 disappointments.
When McVay came in he was largely credited with Goff's miraculous turnaround - but Goff's growth became part of the storyline. Well maybe it was more McVay than we thought - a bit like what he did with Cousins and Shanhan did with Garrapalo - get every last bit of performance out of them - until they bumped up against their own talent ceiling.
