At the time we laid it all on Jeff Fisher's feet. And Shottenheimer. Some of it deserved. But when you look at rookies pressed into starting on non-playoff teams since Goff was drafted - he may be one of the worst. Bad scheme aside - the team had a decent defense with Donald and Brockers, plus a younger, healthier Todd Gurley. Fisher's teams weren't dumpster fires - just consistent 7-9 disappointments.
When McVay came in he was largely credited with Goff's miraculous turnaround - but Goff's growth became part of the storyline. Well maybe it was more McVay than we thought - a bit like what he did with Cousins and Shanhan did with Garrapalo - get every last bit of performance out of them - until they bumped up against their own talent ceiling.
I don't think there is a person left from that offensive coaching staff that is coaching in the NFL right now....Gurley went from fantasy bust to OPOY and Goff went from bust to Pro Bowl
I don't think any team has ever gone form last in offense to best offense in one year ever in the history of the NFL
About the Goff/Mcvay thing...I really think this goes way deeper than any of us will ever know.....just weird when you go back and watch games like Tampa Bay when he tore them up for 375 and 3 TD's when we had zero running game and think that McVay didn't realize that Goff is fully capable of the types of games when the line holds up and the right game plan is implemented.
Goff was a big part of Sean's early success and he will be the first to admit it as he has several times in the past, so to think McVay couldn't figure out how to get the best out of Goff is very puzzling to say the least..He was good enough to get us to a Super Bowl in his second year, but somehow all the sudden he isn't ???
..I think McVay is fixated on the new breed of QB who can run around and make plays, but we all saw what happened to the best in the NFL at it in the Super Bowl when things didn't go well up front. To hear the "we won't win with him" narrative is a bit strange considering he has the second most wins in the entire NFL since 2017 behind only the GOAT, who he outplayed btw in Monday Night this year.... I don't buy that when I watch the divisional playoff game and he was 19-21 to start that game with a broken thumb and we all know it wasn't because of him that we didn't advance....spare me the "he didn't lose the game for us, but he couldn't win it for us" nonsense when it was clear from the begging that the defense was getting boat raced that day in historic fashion...maybe if we had the 2017 OL, Gurley and Kupp we could have, but it would have been tough
the amount of pressure by the media and the fans McVay has put on himself with this move is incredible and obviously I hope it works out with multiple Lombardi's, but man...if it doesn't I hope he doesn't burn himself out
