Thanks again, ZN, for making this about having a good QB but wanting a better one..
That's not my take on all this.
That's
your take on all this.
Having said that, trades happen and Stafford looks good in horns.
...
Fair enough. I extrapolated based on Goff being good on third down and Stafford being even better statistically. With that said, how does your take differ?
I don't really have a cut n dried take.
1. I did not think Goff was as bad as his detractors claim and that in fact he could improve from 2020. Yeah he had 4 bad games in 2020 but then Stafford had 4 bad games in his 5th year too (taking as "bad game" for 2013 a qb rating of 70 or under). In fact I think a lot of Goff criticism is hyperbolic--some people write about him as if he were Wentz.
2. They could win going forward if they fixed some things: stabilized the OL, improved scoring (which is a recurrent McVay problem), improved communication (qb is not supposed to find out the hard way that he and the real coordinator are not communicating about the offense, with the qb not doing some things the coach wants and with the coach not knowing how to convert the qb's strengths into core aspects of his offense). That's a very complicated discussion, as all divorces are.
3. But, there's the trade, so, boom, magically a lot of points 1 and 2 is just academic discussion.
4. I have no problem at all with Stafford and look forward to seeing him play. When I see him play and get a sense of who he is, I assume my fan attachment to him as the Rams qb will grow. I have to see him play though, that's just how I work.
5. Stafford does not solve the Rams major issues though. They need a more stable OL (the OL flat got beat up in some games in 2020), they are not high in scoring which includes issues in the redzone (and that goes back to Washington, that was not just 2020), McVay cannot seem to beat coaches who have a good eye for how his system works (Bellichick, Shanahan, LaFleur), and they lack a piece or 2 like edge rusher and receiver with speed. BUT they are in it and will always be in it--they have enough talent to be in it, and will always at least threaten for the division.
