I guess I'm not surprised at some of the highly critical comments from posters and a couple of talking heads about the way Goff was handled..... even blaming his decline on McVay. But I am surprised at the upset over McVay's and Snead's words and the way the trade came about.

This really came to a head when Wolford started 8 days after Goff had thumb surgery and managed to lead the Rams to a win. Goff immediately publicly grumbled and said, when asked, "We might be in the same book but we're sure not on the same page", with McVay. This was far beyond the player being disappointed that he wasn't given the start due to injury he seems to think he could have played through. It clearly says a rift was going on beyond one game decision.

From that point forward we see McVay and Snead had made the decision to send Goff packing. And, they certainly didn't say bad things about Goff, they just refused to comment on his future with the Rams. What should they have done instead? Say his future was secure and how wonderful he was and then surprise everyone with the trade? Then they would have been liars.... according to some..... because they withheld their true intentions.

I swear. It seems like fans and media think that football (all pro sports for that matter) somehow exists on a different planet, played and run by different beings who are to behave and make decisions on a different criteria that any other business or manager would.

In hindsight the mistake was a) to draft Goff, and b) to extend him. But it certainly wasn't in how he was handled nor in the trade itself. Goff simply didn't develop the way they hoped and had become a mediocre QB who openly was unhappy with his HC's decisions. So what? Is the QB supposed to run the show? Especially a very average one? Not in my book.

So if the Rams handled Goff poorly, what should they have done and said?
