I agree that this is all being overblown.
First of all, Goff only sat because to had screws in the thumb in his passing hand. McVay figures his healthy backup gave him a better chance to win and win he did. He got hurt himself and Goff finished the game but we won. Then For the next game Goff practiced better and got the start. He played really well in the loss to the Packers who are damn good.
