He's not a problem child on the team. He can win some games. He simply just is not worth his contract anymore. 2017 and 18? Sure! But right now he is waste of a ton of cap space. I was REALLY hoping he could turn it around this year. The O line was a decent argument in 2019 but even then and 2020, he simply was not making plays even when he did have time. I watched the four QBs in the Title games and right now, the Rams are WAY behind.
McVay knows he is at a disadvantage with Goff in the backfield. He has decided that Goff is not going to get it done. You would think people would be grateful for that, for saving us more early playoff exits assuming he's right. And I see no reason to think he's wrong when the film shows slow reads, eyeballing early reads, and poor vision of threats both at the LOS and in coverage. So even though I would keep Goff around another year I get where McVay is coming from.
Going forward I don't think we have the resources to go get a plus QB in trade or FA. We're looking at someone to keep the competition/job warm in FA or trade (affordable) and they might also take a shot in the draft at the position. And as I've been saying I expect read-option types to be in play.
