I think it’s fair to explore this area. I realize we aren’t close enough to know, all we can do is draw on anecdotal information and try to connect to what we actually see and hear ourselves.
One story that bothered me earlier this year, and I don’t remember exactly when it was, McVay was asked about how hard Goff works and McVay responded with something that I found a bit off, McVay said you’d have to ask Kevin O’Donnell because he is with Goff every day. That could be absolutely nothing, but it could also mean McVay doesn’t see the same work ethic that he himself has inside of Jared Goff. I wonder how McVay felt about Cousins work ethic? A QB with fewer natural gifts than Goff.
When we watch Goff play we see him repeatedly make boneheaded plays that scream out wtf are you thinking? They are purely mental errors. So ask yourself why? Is Goff mentally incapable of fixing this no matter how hard he works at it? Or would a guy who “works himself to exhaustion”, to steal a phrase from Kobe Bryant, have already fixed it. I’m not psychologist, I just see guys who have worked extremely hard who have the gifts Goff does not make these boneheaded plays over and over.
