I understand there is usually some consideration for need, but Rams seem to overemphasize this to a detriment imo. Sometimes you just take the best player who drops in your lap. See Aaron Donald.
The year they drafted Donald, Fisher and Snead were scouring the earth for a quick penetrating DT. They pursued several free agents that fit that mold but just weren't successful in signing any.
They brought in for pre-draft visits every DT that was projected to go in the first 3 rounds. Remember Dominique Easley? He was drafted in the 2nd and had a visit with the Rams.
Point is, Fisher considered it a huge need. Fortunately, need met value in the best way with Donald. That's what Snead has been doing since he became the GM. It's never been pure need but need is a factor as it is with all teams.
