McVay wants homerun speed in his backfield. Also Hendy last season struggled with the playbook and still has a ways to go in growing into this scheme. I get them wanting to ensure they have enough horses in the backfield when the draft came around.
Ironically enough they also added Xavier Jones (who isn't a big speed guy but supposedly did well in the passing game and made the roster) as well as picking up Raymond Calais from Tampa. Rams having 5 RBs is a surprise to me and I don't know that it makes sense. But maybe it makes sense when you consider that the Rams could be concerned about them staying healthy as a group.
What are you implying with the homerun speed? Hendo may be faster than Akers. I believe he clocked a 4.37 40 time at the Combine although that was unofficial.
What I'm implying is that McVay prioritizes speed, ability to flip the field and bust big runs, as well as act as a receiver in the passing game on top of that. It's the type of back he likes.
Brown is not his type of back. I love the power backs and think this offense is better when that element is in the backfield but McVay... it's not his thing IMO.
But the others are. They all have some mix of breakaway speed and can be targeted in the passing game. Jones is probably the closest thing to Brown (he's not gifted in the speed dept) but he reportedly was excelling in his routes in camp and they kept him on the roster. So I would guess that if they really like Calais (who is gifted in the speed dept) that Jones will be the guy they cut to keep the RB room at 4. I guess they could stay at 5 but I doubt that.
I've always liked Brown and thought he deserved more run than he got even when Gurley was going strong. The fact that he didn't get it is a point in favor of your take about McVay's preferences.
Then again, in prime Gurley he had a hella player and it made sense to roll w/the superstar. Th Rams re-upped w/Brown last year - didn't have to - and let Brown lead the way in week 1 and share the load in week 2 (14 touches for DH, 11 for M
. He clearly entrusts MB with most of the crucial goalline carries.
I think "Brown is not [McVay's] type of back" is pretty overstated.
