In that scenario I'm on board ... except for one thing.
It does seem to fit the Rams' recent strategy of letting some stars go and taking the comp pick when they think they have a replacement groomed in house. The Rams find themselves with too many stars to sign (like most good teams) so considering who is the next man up is part of the discussion on who to keep and who to let go. So yeah, if the Rams think there's not much of a drop off and end up getting a 3rd round comp pick plus $72M over the next 4 years to use elsewhere, that's at least a reasonable path to take in my book.
The 'one thing': the Rams might have made a verbal commitment to Ramsey that they would sign him long term when they traded for him. Ramsey held up his end of the bargain by not holding out. If the Rams made that commitment I would like the Rams to keep their word.
The news on Williams is not really news. We've known about Williams. Maybe Bleacher Report is just being enthusiastic about something we all knew about.
If we knew about it the Rams knew about it. They're known about him for a while. And they plan on keeping Ramsey.
With Hill, Ramsey, Williams, and Long, they have a strong and deep CB corps. A team strength. Though Hill is on his final year.
With Hill, Williams, and Long, they have what is probably a pretty good CB corps, though it is one year from just being Williams and Long. (Williams is an RFA in 2021).
So I figure the Rams know about alternative possibilities are are deliberately going with the scenario where they keep Ramsey. I think they deliberately want a strong, deep CB corps, one they can have for a while by signing Ramsey and surrounding him with solid players.
My view? I'm a bird in the hand kind of guy. I think a defense with both Donald and Ramsey is better than one with Donald plus 2 other good players who are less than what Ramsey is.
