What about the Chiefs, Saints, Niners, Packers, Ravens, Steelers, etc....
How many of the playoff teams last year had top picks on their OL? I bet almost all of them.
AND looking at them all tells me there is more than one way to build an OL.
Even your examples. Packers? With Bulaga gone, they signed what was originally a 5th rounder to replace him. Their LOT is a 4th rounder. The rest of their OL is a 2nd rounder, a 3rd rounder, and a 5th rounder.
Steelers? Yes 2 (low) first rounders and then 3 UDFAs.
Ravens? One high 1st rounder, but the rest are 3rd rounders, a 6th rounder, and a UDFA.
SF? Both OTs were injured last year and they did well with replacements.
There is no one absolutely certain way to build an OL, BUT the common denominator of all the good ones is a good OL coach.
I will say this about the Rams. I think it was a mistake to let Saffold walk. But as it stands right now they have 3 original 2nd rounders. So there's yer "I need pedigree" fix right there.
