OK, here we go. (plus a Bosa v. Greenard v. Tuszka comp.)

March 03, 2020 09:58AM
I'm confused by your: "Off my board" comments. Are they like literally not draftable? Or are they just not guys you personally like or guys that you don't think the Rams like?

Full disclaimer, as I have done this over the years, I have started to figure out what I want from the Bowl games (senior, East West) from the combine and from the pro days. And I have discovered I do not care about the 40 at all for any players except for WRs, RBs, TEs and DBs. I do care about the 10 yard split. That shows me their burst. All you need to see from a DL, LB, OL is their burst. So this is where we might separate.

Example:

Bradlee Anae Utah 6-3 257 4.93 4.91 1.68 25 7.44 31 9-7 10 1/8 32 1/8 Off my board with that 4.9 junk. Maybe if he had a better 3 cone I'd let him have a chance to make it up at his pro day.

So here is the Pac 12 DPOY, he dominated Senior bowl practice, had 3 sacks in the game and showed what superior hand skills mixed with a bunch of moves and counter moves can do for you regardless of speed. But he is off your board because he ran a 4.9 40? All I care about is the 10 split which was 1.68 and plenty good enough to get him to the QB. Is he going to chase down Ruggs from behind on a screen? no. But is has the hand skill, pass rushing moves to rush the QB and the size and power to hold an edge against the run. Is he a 1st or 2nd rounder? Prolly not, But IMO a solid 3rd round choice and he isn't leaving my board any time soon.

And now Brown:

Derrick Brown Auburn 6-4 326 5.16 5.11 1.78 28 8.22 27 9-0 9 34 1/4 Really smooth ... definitely a top 10 caliber player from every angle. He was absolutely miserable in every testing metric possible. 3 cone, 40, long jump, vert. it was all not good. But he is a top 10 in every category? This is where you confuse me. (And for the record, He's a top 5 guy for me in the draft, so we agree) If you are going to hammer on Greenard and Anae for running poorly or poor 3 cones, why are you not doing that to Brown? Just curious.

So some other spots we differenciate:

A.J. Epenesa Iowa 6-6 275 5.04 5.05 1.78 17 7.34 32.5 9-9 10 1/8 34 1/2 Never saw him as athletic enough. Never got the 1st round hype. I have him 4th round rotational 7 tech.

I agree with you that I think he is a tad overhyped, and doesn't have the athletic profile I'd be looking for in a top edge rusher, but he is a first round talent in my mind. So we are a few rounds off on this guy.

Jonathan Greenard Florida 6-4 263 4.87 4.88 1.71 22 7.13 30.5 9-5 9 1/4 34 7/8 4-3 DE only. Off my board.

So another off your board, but why? he was the 2nd best player on Florida's really good defense this year and gets after it. As a stand up edge rusher. To me he is a 2nd to early third 34 Edge. And absolutely in my sights for the Rams.In fact, I will say this about him. If the Rams draft him, my first jersey in the new colors will have Greenard across the back. Again, his 1.71 split was fine. a 7.13 3 cone isn't the end of the world either.

Lets compare Greenard to Nick Bosa to Derrek Tuszka
Bosa: 4.79 40 33.5 vert 7.10 3 cone 116 broad 6'-4" 266 lbs
Greenard: 4.87 40 30.5 vert 7.13 3 cone 113 broad 6'-3" 263 lbs
Tuszka: 4.79 40 33.5 vert 6.87 3 cone 120 broad 6'-4" 251 lbs

So in theory, Tuszka is the superior athlete in every sense (minus the bench), but Bosa was an absolute terror and Greenard and Tuszka are 3rd and 7th round pick respectively. My whole point is Alyo, don't get too wrapped up in these numbers and trust your eyes. You are by far the best scout I have run across and I think you are putting too much into these combine numbers.

Anyhow, some other guys:

Derrek Tuszka North Dakota St. 6-5 251 4.79 4.79 1.69 24 6.87 33.5 10-0 9 7/8 31 3/8 3 cone makes him viable ... flier late?
No his ability to rush the passer and defend the run make him viable. That and his high rev motor. I do agree that he is a 6th to 7th rounder, but it isn't because he basically cloned Nick Bosa's combine.

Jabari Zuniga Florida 6-3 264 4.64 4.64 1.61 29 DNP 33 10-7 10 3/8 32 7/8 4th round edge? Really all about his interviews I think ... he had some missing time.
He is missing something alright. Going into the season, I had my eyes on Zuniga and it was Greenard that stole the show. he just hasn't put it all together for whatever reason. I think its mental.

Gallimore is my #3 DT and I'm not sure he gets out of the 1st. No way he gets to 52. If he does, thats my guy. He is powerful with an explosive first step that would really stress a defense with AD across from him and a people eater in between.

As far as the LBers:

I like Baun, but am still not sure where to place him. Maybe move him around inside LBer to Outside LBer type of a deal...He can rush the QB from anywhere. i just don't think he is a Rams fit. And prolly long gone before 52.

Nick Coe is a dog. He was a dog at Auburn and I wouldn't waste a 6th round pick on him, regardless of how he tests. A me not we guy.

Gay is an interesting case, suspended some and has played OLB and ILB. I'd draft him on day 3 as an ILB and hope to coach the dumbass out of him.

Quarterman - We both love this kid alot. If he's there in the 6th I'd love him on the roster.

Walker - exactly where I thought he would be. Draft him late and develop him.

Weaver - I have loved him for a few years now and I'm not sure I where he lands, but if Davidson and Greenard are gone at 52, I might trade down to the back of the 2nd and gobble him up. He is a 3 down edge in a 34 and I think he has been under rated for a way too long.

I think Woodard and Wilson are day 3 guys that are undervalued and will be underdrafted.

And now on to Weaver:
I am so far off of what everyone else on this board thinks of him, I'm afraid I am missing something. He makes a ton of plays, but he just doesn't ooze ILBer to me. He's not explosive, he's not fast, he isn't a thumper. he's not dynamic in pass coverage. He does have great instincts, and a great motor, but IMO that just won't be enough in the NFL where everything is so much faster.

We are side by side on the LBer and pretty much everywhere else, but I might have to go back and look at the DL guys some more.

Don't waste your time looking back, you're not going that way. - Ragnar Lothbrok
