It is true that Mahomes is a rare animal, but at the same time, Kansas City has nothing like Bruce and Holt. let alone Faulk. As you say, the GSOT Rams were as good or better everywhere else and that includes receiver.
It;s one thing to compare qbs, another to compare teams. Just different kinds of things, IMO.
As everyone knows, the GSOT Rams broke the 500 point mark 3 consecutive years. KC hasn't done it two years in a row yet. Some say that's because Mahomes missed some time. But Warner missed 5 games in 2000 too and they still got 540.
Sometimes it's a matter of the nuances of phrasing. I would list Warner among the elite qbs of all time, which is not a long list of course. With Mahomes, I would say that so far anyway, as a young qb, he promises to be even better.
"A few steps down" just sounds wrong(-ish).
Maybe it's 6 of 1 and half a dozen of the other, but just to my ear it sounds better to put it in a way that credits both.
