Look at the greats - Dickerson, Simms, Emmitt Smith, Walter Payton, LT - they were used heavily and held up year after year. And that was in an age of 2 a day padded practices in camp and hitting in practice during the week.
Would be interesting to see some kind of a study on this. Are there any current primary backs who've held up long enough to even sniff the record books or a shot at the Hall in the future?
Is it overtraining? Too much time in the weight room? I have no idea but think about a guy like Bettis - he was built more like a bowling ball than a gym rate and yet dished it out and took it year after year.
