I can understand the frustration of an old-schooler trying to motivate a player to "get with the program" but the iron fist approach isn't good for long term success most of the time. Coughlin has long struggled with how far to push his minutia based approach. Famously penalizing players for not being early enough can't sit well with most.
The idea at work here is emotional intelligence. A leader has to lead, but the days of the hammer and nail style is over. This is no longer effective with a diverse group of people across differing, cultural, religious, political, and social boundaries. The prime task of a leader is to be the unifying force across these various boundaries. A key element to achieving this is the ability of the leader to form an emotional bridge with with her subject (trust).
