Yep, Coughlin poisoned the well and the Jaguars HAD to fire him. His performance in recent times didn't help but I don't think that would have cost him his job. $700,000 in accumulated fines against one player...that did nothing wrong is a tough sell to any new players.
I can understand the frustration of an old-schooler trying to motivate a player to "get with the program" but the iron fist approach isn't good for long term success most of the time. Coughlin has long struggled with how far to push his minutia based approach. Famously penalizing players for not being early enough can't sit well with most.
