I always liked Coughlin. He's too Old School for today's soft, kinder, gentler NFL.
Actually I haven't read anything on this yet so I am just assuming.
He DID royally screw up. He did that by fining players for things that are not violations of league or CBA rules. He wanted players to get all their medical work and training done by the Falcons at their facility even in the off-season, and fined players that did not do that. It was ruled that he had no authority to do that. In the process of doijng it he alienated players like Ramsey who as a result demanded to be traded.
Now whether that was why they fired him, I don't know yet... like I said I am just assuming. I haven't read anything on the firing yet.
But he did lose on the issue I described:

The NFLPA got a big victory over the NFL and the Jaguars, who are forced to repay fine money to 10 players—including Dante Fowler. ...The arbitrator ruled that it was permissible for teams to require players to rehab year-round but not that they do all the rehab on site.

The fact that Tom Coughlin really thought he could adjudicate players into obedience by levying monetary fines that infringed on their legally negotiated rights tells you all you need to know about how out of touch he is.
