Its hard to justify paying that much for a WR unless he is a WR1.
And you certainly don't give up a 1st round pick for a WR that isn't a WR1.
Its not just his size, Steve Smith wasn't big, but he played big.
Cooks plays small.
Again---look at 2nd contracts.
Every WR that came up Cooks year got more or less the same amount.
Rare, "best in the game" types get more. Guys like Cooks and Watkins got 16 M that year because that's what the 2nd contract market said they would get that year.
Anyone griping now, I will listen hard if they can link me to the post where they protested his contract when he signed it.
....
Its not about griping, its about what they expected to get for their investment. They invested a first round pick and a lot of cap space for a guy who could provide them with a deep threat but little more. It helped get them to the SB last year, so maybe it was worth it for the short term, but long term Cooks will probably be let go to save cap space as soon as they find a better replacement.
I have to be honest with you. I rarely if ever listen to fans about contracts. To me it's the worst kind of armchair GMing. Some of it is almost unreadable.
And Cooks always provided more than just a deep threat. He was never Avery or Givens. You paid him 16 M in 2018 or he walked and you wasted a pick.
This year though there is clearly something wrong with the guy, maybe even physically. That is what I am seeing. He's not holding up. He has not been the same since the last concussion.
And my position is, I never thought Cooks was all that. They signed him because they needed a guy in that role and Watkins didn't work out. I understood it--there were not a whole lot of other options. Till recently he was good in his role and did a lot more than simply go deep a la Avery or Givens.
Right now, though, I am not blaming this loss on him, I am not going to indulge in the blame the contract talk that comes up after losses, and I only hope whatever the issue is with Cooks, his situation improves.
