Not because of what Bortles would do, what the rest of the team would be forced to do. McVay would have to clean things up and call a tighter game and the players would have to be on their "A" game to support him. Maybe get Gurley more involved, spread the ball around to more players, etc.
I don't know what's going on with Goff but it's more than the o-line. He has been playing poorly since the bye last year and the line wasn't a problem that whole time. But I also don't see why they keep choosing to exclude Gurley.
A shakeup at QB won't save this season but I'm sure curious to see if the results would be any different. I can't give the benefit of doubt that Goff isn't a part of the problem.
I agree that Goff is part of the problem from the same rationale that you cite: it's clearly more than the oline because he had issues last year starting with the Lions when the oline was one of the best in the league.
So I have the Oline, Goff and McVay as contributors to whatever the problem is. It's hard to sort out who is mostly at fault on the issues that date back to last year. It seems fairly clear though that the regression of everyone's performance this year is mostly tied to the regression in oline play which has now been compounded by severe injuries.
That said, playing a less talented back up just sounds like a really bad idea. From where I sit, it has no merit. I imagine one would have to be anti-Goff to suggest that because Bortles has already failed as a starter.
Folks seem to be taking it as a given that Goff is clearly better than Bortles. Hard to make that call since they haven't played in the same system at the same time. Bortles has put up more TDs in a season than Goff for example. So, do we look at potential or ignore it? I don't think Bortles is consistently accurate enough but neither do i think Goff is. Both are 60% passers and that's not too good in today's game.
But, as I said, it's not so much about what Bortles could do, it's how the rest of the team would have to improve and play better. Which they have not done for a year now under Goff.
