I thought the only way to get out from under such a contract was to trade and the other team pick it up or restructure.

Him retiring will accelerate everything if I'm not mistaken.

I seem to remember (although I could be wrong as my memory is dodgy) that the Redskins even had to take a cap hit after Sean Taylor was murdered.
