I seem to remember (although I could be wrong as my memory is dodgy) that the Redskins even had to take a cap hit after Sean Taylor was murdered.
At this point, they can't cut or trade him, he can't retire. They can restructure or he can offer to give the money back. Actually the player's union probably wouldn't even allow him to give the money back.
So if they want to get out of the contract without huge pain, a restructure is the only option.
