the results are the results. The Rams have never been 2nd, 2nd, and 1st over a 3 year period of rushing that I could find in the history of the franchise.
Faulk went from a 4.0 yards per carry guy to a 5.5 yards per carry guy because Martz found a way to make the running game more effective.
I went and looked up the time of Dickerson for example and here are some rankings of the team rushing placing during that time being he is also an all-time great.
1983 - 9th
1984 - 1st
1985 - 14th
1986 - 7th
1987 - 7th
The key here is how much Faulk improved. Getting an extra 1.5 yards per carry in a running game is so significant and allows you to really open up your offense and more flexibility with down and distance and on and on.
Much of it was spacing, scheming and planning, and keeping defenses on their heals. Hence, running with a purpose, versus running to occupy time and space.
Space management is one of the most underrated concepts in any sport. Manage when bodies will occupy space under different circumstances and you claim the space when the opponent is not there or before they get there. These 2 have that concept down so well!
