After the Dallas playoff game, I thought the knee thing was overblown and then this offseason I thought they'd pull back on his touches a little but still ride him at times.
Something doesn't smell right here. It's pretty clear that there are O-line problems, but also defenses seem to be selling out to attack Goff and the passing game - and it's working. There is no backfield threat. If we had one - we could exploit the pressure with delayed hand offs and traps and play action.
Either McVay is working too hard to protect Gurley (a him not we mentality) or there is really something seriously wrong with him. Either way, it's a problem. I know this sounds cruel - but McVay should try and ride him for as many games as he can. If he can't hold up - so be it - we'll look for someone who can and he can be a highly paid 3rd down back. I'd rather that than drag this BS out for the next couple years.
I've been saying since last December that whatever is wrong with Gurley's knee is something more serious than what rest and a bye week can resolve. I predicted he'd miss the playoffs. AND, I said during the off-season that I remained skeptical about THIS season. TONS of folks around here figured, nah... Gurley's good to go. See, he's at a party and he's not limping? LOL, that proved nothing. Some folks have been quick to buy what McVay's been selling when it comes to Gurley's health and the team's performance. Not me. In fact, when I realized McVay has been feeding us a load of bull concerning Gurley since early January, my respect for McVay dropped somewhat. Now, to be fair, I'm not exactly sure WHAT he should have said. I know McVay wants and needs to be careful. A coach never wants to show his hand to other teams, doesn't want to say too much, and has to also be aware of HIPPA laws, etc. But at the same time, to continually say, "Gurley's fine and I just have to call games better" is just not true either. The media is not blind or stupid. Neither are the fans. How long does he think this lie is gonna play? Nobody's buying it anymore.
I watched McVay during his presser after the game and I've not seen that particular face on him at a presser. Then again, he's not ever been beaten that badly since he's been the Rams HC either. He was stony, stoic, a touch icy... and there was a current of anger rippling underneath the whole time he took questions. All normal feelings after losing like that, to be sure. But Sean.. YOU are the cause behind some of what happened on the field. If it bothers you and you don't like it... DO BETTER. Don't just talk about it.. DO IT. If you're such a genius... let's see it. But if Sunday was an example of genius at work (and yeah, I'm throwing Wade in the mix), we are in for a long and disappointing season.
