I think last year, structurally and literally, McVay operated within narrow parameters because he felt he could gain an edge doing so. He succeeded for about a year and a half.
Then, I think, those narrow parameters began to give DCs an edge because they knew what to expect and because our offense was compressed and lacked spacing. I don't believe McVay reacted very effectively. He had a couple of months between DET and the Bowl, and I am not sure he opened up those parameters.
I think more than anything I want to see our wide game operate with some horizontal space. I am not sure it's a matter of play calling, but rather one of personnel and deployment.
Anyway, we'll see.
