I guess you need to establish an account to read the article. In essence it focuses on a younger generation of NFL players who weigh the physical loss to themselves and to those around them against the financial loss to both them and family. Health vs dough. The younger you are the more you question the issue. Is that why the older you are you question those that question ? Is it fair to claim those that choose health and family over financial rewards as being lesser beings? Is it simply a matter of macho vs intelligence? Macho is for the fans. Survival is for the players and the new generation of players can see their future in the pain and suffering of the older NFL players. Simply put, they listen to the souls of the suffering. What is unfortunate is that most players do not have either the intelligence or the education that Luck has to make the break. They really have no choice. They-like the gladiators in Rome-have it simple: fight the lions or die by the sword.
While I applaud Luck I have empathy for those that cannot step away for the simple reason that they have no place to go. And yet Professional football is still the single most popular sport in America. What does that tell us about ourselves? What does that say about me?
As a final aside: Do we feel sorry for the Colts. Hardly. They have known for some time this day was on their doorstep. There are no surprises here. This may have been a shock to us fans but not to Colt management.
