However the ACL is torn doesn't really matter as it is reconstructed. There are several types of reconstrcution used. When I had mine back in the late 90's the patella tendon was the choice method here anyway (cut out middle third of patella ligament and a bone peg from either side). A few years before a friend had their's reconstructed using a hamgsting graft. They tried synthetic legaments, but these seemed to fail quicker.
Anyway the way the ACL actual tears doesn't matter so much as its being replaced. The issues are how much damage occurs to the various cartiledges, and or other main knee ligaments. I tore my meniscus and anterior cartilage and have had grief almost ever since requiring several clean ups over the years and early degenerative onset.
Hopefully Kupp and Gurly have little of this and they'll be good for years to come!
