Not that I don't think other QB's, even Bortles, couldn't come in and excel under McVay. I think that's a very real possibility and one, if the NFL was a video game, would be worth considering. Paying Goff $30M+ a season or bringing in the next guy on a cheaper deal is something worth considering. While I am happy with Goff's production overall, I don't think he's irreplaceable.
I also hope I'm wrong and that Goff really "gets it" this year and ascends to the next level and becomes one of the elite. We'll see.
But we won't see Bortles doing much of anything IMO. Just like we didn't see Mannion do anything in the preseason. Not only will the Rams not be playing their starters, they won't be running the real offense. So, what can Bortles really show? The only way he gets to play for the real Rams is if Goff is hurt and as someone already pointed out, he'd have to REALLY produce to keep Goff from getting his job back when he got healthy.
I appreciate the bold prediction but other than injury, Bortles hasn't got a snowball's chance as they say.
